Can You Set the Apple Watch Stand Reminder to Every 30 Minutes? How to Get a Reminder Every Half Hour

For watchOS 27 and iOS 27 · Checked October 2026

Based on what Apple says, the settings in iOS 27, and our own testing on Apple Watch, here’s whether the Apple Watch stand reminder can be set to every 30 minutes, and the ways to get a reminder every 30 minutes instead.

Can you set the Apple Watch stand reminder to every 30 minutes?

No. The stand reminder is just on or off; there’s no interval to choose, and you can’t set hours for it.

Apple Watch tracks standing by the clock hour: if you stand up and move for at least a minute during an hour, that hour counts as a stand hour.[1] Your stand goal is how many stand hours you aim for in a day, and you can set it anywhere from 6 to 16 hours.[2] If you haven’t stood by minute 50 of an hour, you get a stand reminder.[3]

The stand reminder works one clock hour at a time: you stood during the 9:00–10:00 hour, so no reminder; you sat through the first 50 minutes of the 10:00–11:00 hour, so it reminds you at 10:50.
The stand reminder counts each clock hour on its own and only checks whether you stood during it.

Because the stand reminder counts by the clock hour, you might sit for up to 1 hour 49 minutes before it reminds you; see Apple Watch’s Stand Reminder: What It Can and Can’t Do.

In the Activity settings of the Apple Watch app, Stand Reminders sits alongside a few other options, such as Daily Coaching, Progress Updates, and Goal Completions.[4] Only Progress Updates lets you choose an interval: every 2, 4, 6, or 8 hours. But these updates report your progress on your Activity rings; they aren’t stand reminders.

Some answers online say you can change the stand reminder to 30 minutes in a “Reminder Time” setting. There’s no such setting in iOS 27.

How can you get Apple Watch to remind you every 30 minutes?

Of the features built into Apple Watch, Chimes is the simplest to set up: turn on one switch, and it plays a sound and haptics every 30 minutes, but it offers only three intervals (hourly, every 30 minutes, or every 15 minutes), and it goes off whether or not you’ve stood up. Most other built-in ways need a separate one for every half hour. For a reminder only after 30 minutes of sitting, with the timer starting over when you get up, you can use MoveMonkey, a stand-up reminder app.

Option 1: Chimes (one switch, only three intervals)

  1. Go to the Settings app on your Apple Watch, tap Accessibility, then tap Chimes.
  2. Turn on Chimes, then choose 30 minutes under Schedule.
  3. Under Sounds, choose Bells or Birds.

You can also go to the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap My Watch, tap Accessibility, then tap Chimes. Apple says: “When chimes are turned on, Apple Watch plays the selected sound and haptics at regular time intervals.”[5]

But Chimes is made for telling the time: it plays by the clock, and you can’t set hours for it. In October 2026, we tested it on watchOS 27.0.1: with Silent Mode on, Chimes only tapped the wrist, without a sound; with Do Not Disturb on, it neither made a sound nor tapped. Apple Watch has its own Silent Mode, turned on from the watch; silencing your iPhone doesn’t silence your watch.

Option 2: Mindfulness reminders (one per half hour)

  1. On your iPhone, go to the Apple Watch app, then tap My Watch.
  2. Scroll to the bottom, tap Apps, then tap Mindfulness.
  3. Below Reminders, tap Add Reminder, then set a time.
  4. Add one more for each half hour, such as 9:00, 9:30, 10:00…

Apple says that below Reminders, you can turn Start of Day and End of Day on or off, or “tap Add Reminder to create additional reminders.”[6] Each reminder is for one time of day, so a reminder every half hour from 9:00 to 18:00 takes 19 of them. On watchOS 27.0.1, we added reminders one by one up to 20, and every one was saved.

Option 3: Shortcuts automations (one shortcut, several times of day)

  1. On your iPhone, open the Shortcuts app, create a new shortcut, and add the Show Notification action.
  2. Tap Edit, then tap Automation, choose Time of Day, and set a time, such as 9:00.
  3. Add 9:30, 10:00, and so on the same way.
  4. Tap Edit, tap the Info button, tap Privacy, then turn on Allow Running When Locked. Otherwise, your iPhone asks you each time whether to run it.

In the Shortcuts app in iOS 27, Apple says: “Automations are now built directly into your shortcuts, including the ones you share.”[7] In October 2026, we tested it on iOS 27: one shortcut can take several Time of Day triggers. One every half hour from 9:00 to 18:00 means adding 19 times. The notification comes from your iPhone: when your iPhone is locked, it appears on Apple Watch; while you’re using your iPhone, it appears only on your iPhone.[8]

Option 4: Alarms (one per half hour)

In the Alarms app on Apple Watch, an alarm can repeat only on the days of the week you choose,[9] so you need a separate alarm for every half hour, and you have to turn off each one by hand when it goes off. For an alarm that only taps your wrist, Apple says: “To create an alarm that taps your wrist, but doesn’t make a sound, turn on Silent Mode.”[9]

Option 5: Reminders (two, each repeating hourly)

In the Reminders app, a reminder can repeat hourly at most; there’s no option to repeat by the minute.[10] You can set two reminders, one on the hour and one on the half hour, and set both to repeat Hourly.

Option 6: Timers (restart by hand each time)

Set a 30-minute timer in the Timers app on Apple Watch. Apple says: “When a timer goes off, you can tap [the Repeat Timer button] to start a timer of the same duration.”[11] It’s the only way here that counts from when you start it, but you have to tap that button yourself each time; it doesn’t repeat on its own.

Option 7: MoveMonkey stand-up reminder app (reminds you only after 30 minutes of sitting)

  1. On your iPhone, install MoveMonkey, a stand-up reminder app, from the App Store.
  2. When you first open it, set Remind After to 30 minutes. To change it later, tap the gear at the top left of MoveMonkey’s home screen to open the app’s Settings.

It counts from when you last got up: walking or standing starts the timer over, and it reminds you only after you’ve sat for 30 minutes. You can set Remind After to 30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes.

Why aren’t Apple Watch Mindfulness reminders working, even after following a tutorial?

Check two settings first: whether Mute for Today is on in Mindfulness, and whether Mindfulness notifications are set to Send to Notification Center.

With Mute for Today on, you won’t get any more Mindfulness reminders that day.[6] When Mindfulness notifications are set to Send to Notification Center, they go straight to Notification Center and Apple Watch doesn’t alert you.[8] To change it back: on your iPhone, go to the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch, tap Notifications, then tap Mindfulness and choose Allow Notifications.

A note on Xiaohongshu, a Chinese social app, shows how to get a reminder every half hour with Mindfulness reminders. It has more than 300 likes, and many commenters say they set it all up but got no reminders.[12] Mindfulness reminders do work: in October 2026, on watchOS 27.0.1, we added one for 2 minutes later, and it came on time. Another user reports that after switching to a new watch, the reminders came only after they opened the Mindfulness app once and allowed notifications.[13]

How are Chimes, Mindfulness reminders, and the rest different from the Apple Watch stand reminder?

All of these built-in ways remind you at set times, whether or not you’ve just stood up.

Apple describes Chimes, Mindfulness, Shortcuts, Alarms, Reminders, and Timers only in terms of times or intervals; none of these descriptions mentions checking whether you’ve stood up.[5][6][7][9][10][11] For example, if you get up for a glass of water at 9:25, you’ll still get the 9:30 reminder. The stand reminder does check whether you’ve stood during the hour, but only within each clock hour.

MoveMonkey: a stand-up reminder that counts from when you last got up

A little monkey reminds you only after you’ve sat for the time you set (30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes) since you last got up. It works on iPhone and Apple Watch, or on iPhone alone, and walking or standing starts the timer over.

It starts counting only after you’re up in the morning, can stay quiet during your Lunch Break, and reminds you only during the Reminder Hours you set.

Tap Get Up, walk for just a minute, and the monkey cheers for you.
