How does the Apple Watch stand reminder count time?

The Apple Watch stand reminder works by the clock hour: if you’ve been sitting for the first 50 minutes of an hour, it reminds you at about minute 50.

In the notification settings of the Fitness app on iPhone, Apple says: “Receive a reminder to stand on your watch if you’ve been sitting for the first 50 minutes of an hour.”[1]

Think of it as a row of boxes: each clock hour is one box, such as 10:00 to 11:00. If you stand up and move for a minute during the first 50 minutes of that box, the hour counts as a stand hour and there’s no reminder; if you don’t, the reminder comes at about 10:50. It only looks at the box, not at how long you’ve been sitting.

The stand reminder works one clock hour at a time: you stood during the 9:00–10:00 hour, so no reminder; you sat through the first 50 minutes of the 10:00–11:00 hour, so it reminds you at 10:50.
The stand reminder counts each clock hour on its own and only checks whether you stood during it.

Because it counts by the clock hour, not from when you sat down, how long you sit before a reminder varies:

Timeline: up for water at 9:00, sat down at 9:01, no reminder at 9:50, the reminder only at 10:50, after sitting for 1 hour 49 minutes.
The 9:00 hour already counts as a stand hour, so the stand reminder waits until 10:50.

Apple Watch tracks standing by the clock hour: if you stand up and move for at least a minute during an hour, that hour counts as a stand hour.[2] Your stand goal is how many stand hours you aim for in a day, and you can set it anywhere from 6 to 16 hours.[3] For Stand Minutes, Stand vs. Exercise, and changing the goal, see How Does Apple Watch Count Stand Hours?

Can the Apple Watch stand reminder go off every 30 minutes?

No, the Apple Watch stand reminder can’t be set to every 30 minutes. It’s just on or off: you can’t change the interval or set hours for it.

If you want a reminder every 30 minutes, you can use Chimes and other features built into Apple devices as a workaround, but they all remind you at set times, whether or not you’ve just stood up; for how to set up each one and how many you need, see Can You Set the Apple Watch Stand Reminder to Every 30 Minutes? How to Get a Reminder Every Half Hour.

For how often you should get up, and what the guidelines and studies say, see How Often Should You Get Up from Sitting? Every Hour or Every 30 Minutes.

If you’d like a reminder only after you’ve sat for 30 minutes, with the timer starting over when you get up, consider a stand-up reminder app such as MoveMonkey.

Does the Apple Watch stand reminder go off at night while you sleep? How do you turn it off?

If you take Apple Watch off to sleep, the stand reminder won’t go off. Apple says that when Apple Watch can’t detect that it’s on your wrist, it doesn’t provide reminders to stand.[4]

If you sleep with Apple Watch on, see Apple Watch Telling You to Stand at Night? How to Turn It Off While You Sleep for whether it still goes off and how to turn it off just at night.

If you want reminders to stop at night on their own, consider MoveMonkey, a stand-up reminder app that reminds you only during the Reminder Hours you set.

Why doesn’t the Apple Watch stand reminder go off when it’s turned on?

If the Apple Watch stand reminder is on but doesn’t go off, it’s usually because the current hour already counts as a stand hour, even if you only got up for a glass of water. So you may sit for over an hour without a reminder; see the example above, where you get up for water at 9:00.

Other possible reasons:

Why is Apple Watch stand tracking inaccurate?

To count an hour as a stand hour, Apple Watch checks whether you stood up and moved, not just whether you were standing: you need to stand and move for at least 1 minute in that hour.[2]

If you’ve said you use a wheelchair, the Stand ring becomes the Roll ring, and Stand Reminders become Roll Reminders.

For why standing sometimes doesn’t count, see Why isn’t Apple Watch counting my stand hours?

Is there a stand reminder on iPhone without an Apple Watch?

No, iPhone alone has no stand reminder. Apple says the Fitness app on iPhone shows the Move ring; you also see the Exercise and Stand rings only if you have an Apple Watch.[5]

For other ways to remind yourself to get up with just an iPhone, see How to Remind Yourself to Get Up with Just an iPhone, No Apple Watch.

If you use only an iPhone and want a stand-up reminder, consider MoveMonkey, which works without an Apple Watch.

MoveMonkey’s little monkey

Stand-up reminder app · Now available on the App Store

MoveMonkey: a stand-up reminder that counts from when you last got up

A little monkey reminds you only after you’ve sat for the time you set (30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes) since you last got up. It works on iPhone and Apple Watch, or on iPhone alone, and walking or standing starts the timer over.

It starts counting only after you’re up in the morning, can stay quiet during your Lunch Break, and reminds you only during the Reminder Hours you set.

Tap Get Up, walk for just a minute, and the monkey cheers for you.
