Apple Watch Telling You to Stand at Night? How to Turn It Off While You Sleep

For watchOS 27 and iOS 27 · Checked October 2026

Here’s whether Apple Watch tells you to stand at night and how to turn that off, based on what Apple says and our own testing.

Does the Apple Watch stand reminder go off while you sleep?

If you sleep with your Apple Watch on, you won’t get stand reminders as long as Do Not Disturb is on, or the Sleep Focus is set to Allow Notifications From with Fitness left off the list.

Apple Watch tracks standing by the clock hour: if you stand up and move for at least a minute during an hour, that hour counts as a stand hour.[1] Your stand goal is how many stand hours you aim for in a day, and you can set it anywhere from 6 to 16 hours.[2] If you haven’t stood by minute 50 of an hour, you get a stand reminder.[3]

The stand reminder works one clock hour at a time: you stood during the 9:00–10:00 hour, so no reminder; you sat through the first 50 minutes of the 10:00–11:00 hour, so it reminds you at 10:50.
The stand reminder counts each clock hour on its own and only checks whether you stood during it.

Because the stand reminder counts by the clock hour, you might sit for up to 1 hour 49 minutes before it reminds you; see Apple Watch’s Stand Reminder: What It Can and Can’t Do.

Take Apple Watch off, and you won’t get stand reminders. Apple says that when Apple Watch can’t detect that it’s on your wrist, it doesn’t provide reminders to stand.[4] But to track your sleep with Apple Watch, you need to wear it to bed.[5] To stop stand reminders at night while you wear it, you can use the Sleep Focus or Do Not Disturb; see below for how.

Some users report being woken by a stand reminder at 4 or 5 in the morning with the Sleep Focus on.[6][7]

Why does Apple Watch still tell you to stand in sleep mode?

When the Sleep Focus (what many people call “sleep mode”) is set to Silence Notifications From, it silences only the apps on your list, and notifications from all other apps come through as usual, so you can still get stand reminders. When it’s set to Allow Notifications From, notifications from every app not on your list are silenced.

In the Sleep Focus notification settings in Settings on iPhone, Apple says: “When Sleep Focus is on, notifications from apps you select will be allowed. All others will be silenced and sent to Notification Center.”[8] The iPhone User Guide calls the two options “Allow specific apps” and “Silence specific apps.”[9]

Some users report that after switching the Sleep Focus to Allow Notifications From and leaving the list empty, they got no more stand reminders that night; others still got them after doing the same.[7] Some users stopped getting them after adding Fitness to the Silence Notifications From list, while others say they still got them with Fitness added.[6][7]

In October 2026, we tested on watchOS 27.0.1: with the Sleep Focus set to Allow Notifications From and only Alarms and Sleep on the list, we wore Apple Watch and kept sitting, and no stand reminder came at minute 50; with no Focus on, we sat the same way and got the stand reminder at minute 50. Also, stand reminders don’t stay in Notification Center the way other apps’ notifications do, so you can’t find a silenced one afterward.

How do you turn off the Apple Watch stand reminder while you sleep?

To stop stand reminders only at night, set the Sleep Focus to Allow Notifications From and leave Fitness off the list, or turn on Do Not Disturb before bed; if you don’t need them during the day either, just turn off Stand Reminders.

Ways to stop Apple Watch stand reminders at nightAt nightDuring the day
Set the Sleep Focus to Allow Notifications FromNo reminders (our test)Reminders as usual
Set the Sleep Focus to Silence Notifications FromReminders possible (user reports)Reminders as usual
Turn on Do Not Disturb before bedNo reminders (our test)Reminders as usual once you turn off Do Not Disturb
Turn off Stand RemindersNo remindersNo reminders
Take off Apple WatchNo reminders, but no sleep trackingReminders as usual once you put it back on

Option 1: Set the Sleep Focus to Allow Notifications From (reminders continue during the day)

  1. On your iPhone, go to the Settings app, tap Focus, then tap Sleep.
  2. Under Allow Notifications, tap Apps.
  3. Tap Allow Notifications From, and keep only the apps you need on the list (such as Alarms); don’t add Fitness.[9]
  4. Leave Time Sensitive Notifications off. Its description says: “Allow apps not in your allowed list to send notifications marked as Time Sensitive immediately.”[8]

You don’t need to set anything up on Apple Watch. Apple says that when you set up Focus on your iPhone, “your Apple Watch automatically uses the same preferences.”[10]

Option 2: Turn on Do Not Disturb before bed

  1. On Apple Watch, press the side button to open Control Center.
  2. Tap the Do Not Disturb button, then choose Do Not Disturb.
  3. Tap On, or choose an ending point, such as On for 1 hour.[11]

Apple lists Do Not Disturb as good for “meetings, appointments, and instances when you want to prevent all notifications.”[11] In our testing, no stand reminder came while Do Not Disturb was on. To have it turn on every night and off every morning by itself, add a schedule; see the next section.

Option 3: Turn off Stand Reminders (no reminders during the day either)

  1. On your iPhone, go to the Apple Watch app, then tap My Watch.
  2. Scroll to the bottom, tap Apps, then tap Activity.[1][12]
  3. Turn off Stand Reminders.

You can also go to the Settings app on Apple Watch, tap Activity, then turn off Stand Reminders.[12]

Can you turn off Apple Watch stand reminders only at night?

The stand reminder itself is just on or off; you can’t set hours for it. To stop it only at night, schedule a Focus to turn on automatically at night.[12]

There are two ways:

If you use your sleep schedule, also set the Sleep Focus to Allow Notifications From, as described above, so stand reminders don’t come at night.

If you’d like to choose the hours you get reminders, consider MoveMonkey, a stand-up reminder app that reminds you only during the Reminder Hours you set.

MoveMonkey: a stand-up reminder that counts from when you last got up

A little monkey reminds you only after you’ve sat for the time you set (30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes) since you last got up. It works on iPhone and Apple Watch, or on iPhone alone, and walking or standing starts the timer over.

It starts counting only after you’re up in the morning, can stay quiet during your Lunch Break, and reminds you only during the Reminder Hours you set.

Tap Get Up, walk for just a minute, and the monkey cheers for you.
